Our Perspective:

Notice anything different about this Rolex? The curved, sculpted lugs immediately stand out, and that design detail ties directly into the reference’s nickname. The Rolex “Bombay” nickname comes from the French word bombé, meaning rounded or convex, a reference to the sculpted, curved lugs found on select Oyster Perpetual models from the 1940s and 1950s. Over time, the term was Americanized into “Bombay".  Since then, Rolex hasn’t experimented much with lug designs, especially in the modern catalog, which makes these early pieces feel even more special today. It’s an under-appreciated model that truly deserves more love from collectors.
This 14k yellow gold example showcases a distinctive dial rarely seen, with unconventional 3, 6, and 9 arrowhead markers and original lume that has developed an even patina. The sharp case, original crown, and well-preserved movement attest to meticulous stewardship across decades. A genuinely kept Bombay with distinctive character and a unique configuration doesn't come around too often.

Condition Report:

Very good vintage condition. Case has been polished in the past but retains sharp Bombay lugs and deep hallmark on inner lug. Medium scratches and dents throughout the case and bezel. Light scratches and signs of wear throughout acrylic crystal. Original dial has never been restored or refinished and shows medium spotting throughout. Original lume on dial and hands show patina. There is minor oxidation/discoloration on the original hands.
Strap is a replacement unbranded crocodile strap. Buckle is a gold-tone replacement buckle.
Movement shows light signs of previous servicing and discoloration/age. Watch sets and runs fine  at a 5-position average of -9.1 S/D | 225° AMP | 0.4MS BE. However, there is resistance when winding the crown, so a service is recommended for accurate timekeeping and no guarantee is made on future timekeeping. This watch can be fully serviced prior to shipment upon request of the buyer.
