18K 1991 Rolex Day-Date 18238 36mm Diamond String Dial Watch

Introduced in 1988, the Rolex Day-Date Ref. 18238 refined the formula established by its predecessors with the introduction of the Caliber 3155, bringing a double quickset function while preserving everything that made the Day-Date Rolex's flagship model. Crafted entirely in 18K yellow gold, the 36mm case has long been regarded as the quintessential Day-Date size, offering the perfect balance of presence, comfort, and timeless proportions. Whether dressed up or down, few watches transition between occasions as effortlessly.

This X-serial example from 1991 is elevated by its exceptionally rare factory diamond string dial, one of Rolex's most distinctive dial configurations. Rather than traditional hour markers, the diamonds appear to float across fine horizontal gold bands, creating remarkable depth and elegance without overpowering the design. Just as impressive is its outstanding state of preservation, with a thick, well-defined case, sharp fluted bezel, and crisp lugs that have avoided the over-polishing often seen on vintage Day-Dates. Condition Report:

Case: May have been lightly polished once in the past, but retains extremely sharp lugs, bezel flutes and deep hallmarks on inner lugs. Medium scratches and small dings throughout the case and bracelet. Crown has been replaced with a new factory Rolex crown.

Strap/Bracelet: Original 18K yellow gold period-correct 8385 President bracelet shows medium signs of wear with minimal stretch and 20 links. Fits a maximum wrist size of 6.75".

Dial/Crystal/Hands: Factory dial, hands and sapphire crystal are in very well-preserved condition with only minimal signs of aging visible under magnification.

Movement: Automatic Rolex Caliber 3155 has recently received a full service and winds, sets and runs without issue. The watch currently runs at a 5-position average of +3.5 S/D | 247° AMP | .0 MS BE and is under a 1-year mechanical warranty by our watchmaker. All day/date functions work perfectly.
