The Baroque is one of the more unusual creations to emerge from Audemars Piguet during Jacqueline Dimier’s time at the manufacture. Inspired by the form of an orchid, its elongated 18K yellow gold case is framed by diamonds across the bezel and lugs, while a rich blue topaz crystal brings an unexpected flash of color to the design. Its C-series serial places this example in the early to mid-1980s.
At 19mm x 30mm and just 7mm thick, the watch is petite in dimension but surprisingly substantial on the wrist. Nearly 60 grams of 18K gold gives it remarkable weight for a ladies watch, much of it coming from what appears to be an exceptionally rare, possibly unique chainmail-style bracelet. The bracelet is finished with an unusual double deployant clasp, while the absence of a conventional crown keeps the case uninterrupted, with the watch instead set discreetly from the caseback.
We have never seen another Baroque in this configuration come to market, and it is entirely possible we may never see another. The diamond-set case and lugs, blue topaz crystal, extraordinary bracelet construction, and sheer amount of gold make this feel less like a watch with a bracelet and more like a piece of high jewelry that happens to tell time.
Condition Report:
Case: Unpolished case with medium patina developing throughout. Moderate signs of wear including scratches and dings throughout.
Strap/Bracelet: 18K yellow gold chainmail bracelet is in beautiful condition with medium signs of wear and scratches throughout. 18K yellow gold AP double-deployant clasp has medium scratches and is hallmarked 750 and "AP&Co.". Fits a maximum wrist size of 6".
Dial/Crystal/Hands: Dial in extremely well-preserved condition with minimal to no signs of age. Hands have light oxidation throughout. Topaz crystal has light scratches visible under magnification.
Movement: Quartz Audemars Piguet caliber sets, runs and keeps accurate time without issues.
