18K Cartier Tank Américaine Moonphase Watch

Our Perspective:

Introduced in the late 1980s, the Cartier Tank Américaine drew direct inspiration from the earlier Cintrée, adopting its elongated proportions and curved profile while refining the design for more contemporary wear. Its arched case and extended brancards preserved the architectural DNA of the Tank while adding a greater sense of fluidity and wrist presence. 

This particular Ref. 819908 stands out within that era for its moonphase complication, positioned at 6 o’clock. Cartier produced a limited run of quartz-powered moonphase variants across the Tank Louis, Santos Galbée, and Tank Américaine- an uncommon pairing that blended practicality with a traditionally mechanical, poetic display. Here, the moonphase adds depth and balance to the grained silver dial without overwhelming its symmetry. Examples like this are increasingly difficult to come by today, representing a distinct and collectible chapter in Cartier’s history where understated design met quiet experimentation.

Condition Report:

Case: Appears unpolished, but could have been lightly touched up in its lifetime. Medium scratches and small dents throughout, with a larger dent on bezel between 7 and 8 o'clock. Hallmark present on back of lug.

Strap/Bracelet: Original burgundy Cartier crocodile strap shows medium wear and discoloration. Original 18K yellow gold Cartier deployant buckle has moderate scratches throughout. Currently fits a maximum wrist size of 6.5".

Dial/Crystal/Hands: Dial, hands are in near-mint condition with very minimal signs of age. Crystal is in good condition with a small chip at the 5 o'clock corner that is not apparent to the naked eye.

Movement: Quartz Cartier caliber sets, runs and keeps accurate time without issues. Date quickset and moonphase function as intended.
