18K Cartier Tank Louis PM Watch

Our Perspective:

Released in 1917, the Cartier Tank was inspired by the silhouette of WWI Renault tanks, translating rigid military form into one of the most elegant watch designs ever created. Its rectangular case, elongated brancards, and understated dial have made it a design icon for over a century.

The Tank Louis Cartier, named after its creator, remains the purest expression of the original vision, maintaining the timeless proportions and classical aesthetic that defined the earliest models. This particular model, the ref. 78087 (the sister of the larger 78086), dates to the 1970s/1980s, a period that saw a creative resurgence for Cartier with the then-new Louis Cartier watch collection: a series of 12 iconic models, all presented in large and small versions (minus the baignoire). Crafted in yellow gold and powered by a manual-wind caliber 78-1 movement, this watch has a "spider" dial and Swiss signature at 6 o'clock.

Condition Report:

Very Good vintage condition. Watch has likely been lightly polished but is in strong condition with a sharp & visible hallmark under crown (which is usually polished off) and clear engravings on caseback. Case shows signs of moderate use including medium scratches and indentations. "Spider" dial shows medium even crazing/cracking throughout the lacquer but no chips or missing pieces. The dial also has some light spotting around the edges. Crystal shows minor scratches and wear. Cartier-signed black lizard strap shows moderate signs of wear and discoloration. Watch comes with an 18K yellow gold pin buckle signed "UNROC".

Manual-winding Cal.78-1 movement is fully original and clean. Watch winds, sets and runs but a service is recommended for accurate timekeeping. The movement is currently running at a position average of -25.7 S/D | 233° AMP | 0.3MS BE. A full overhaul can be provided at buyer's expense upon request.

Watch comes with a Must de Cartier box and a blank lifetime guarantee card, to our knowledge this card is not valid without the dealer's stamp, but not confirmed.
