Our Perspective:
Released in 1917, the Cartier Tank was inspired by the silhouette of WWI Renault tanks, translating rigid military form into one of the most elegant watch designs ever created. Its rectangular case, elongated brancards, and understated dial have made it a design icon for over a century.
The Tank Louis Cartier, named after its creator, remains the purest expression of the original vision, maintaining the timeless proportions and classical aesthetic that defined the earliest models. This particular model, the ref. 96065, is the successor to the famous reference 78086. The most significant change came inside the case: out went the ETA movement, and in came the ultra-thin, hand-wound Frédéric Piguet Caliber 21 (FP21). This shift allowed Cartier to slim the profile even further, earning the model its “extra-plate” (extra-flat) nickname.
The aesthetic saw slight upgrades as well. The enamel dials that defined earlier pieces were replaced with Cartier’s guilloché or flinqué pattern- a textured finish that would later become one of the brand’s most recognizable signatures. Together, these changes made the ref. 96065 one of the best tank references in our opinion. To find an example like this one with a near-perfect dial, sharp and deep hallmarks & engravings, a strong case and original buckle is extremely rare.
Condition Report:
Very Good vintage condition. Watch has been lightly polished previously. Case and Cartier 18K buckle show light scratches and dings. Strap is worn and discolored. Hallmarks and engravings are crisp. Original dial is in near-perfect condition with minimal signs of age on edge between 9 and 10 o'clock. Movement is extremely clean and is running at an average of -15.4 S/D | 265° AMP | 0.4MS BE when tested in 5 positions.
Condition Grade: 8.5/10
