18K IWC Caliber 89 Watch

Our Perspective:

This mid-1950s IWC is a true piece of watchmaking history, combining timeless design with one of the brand’s most celebrated movements. While the case measures 36mm, the elongated 44.5mm lug-to-lug span gives it far more wrist presence than expected, allowing it to wear comfortably on larger wrists as well. The clean, untouched dial has aged beautifully well, preserving its originality from when it was new over 70 years ago. In addition, the fancy beveled lugs give the watch a little more character than ordinary IWCs. 

Crafted in solid 18k yellow gold, the watch carries an understated elegance that feels distinctly classic without being overly formal. Powering it is the legendary IWC Caliber 89, widely regarded as one of the finest manually wound movements of the post-war era. Known for its durability, precision, and beautifully engineered construction, the Cal. 89 played a major role in establishing IWC’s reputation for technical excellence throughout the 20th century. Despite its historical importance, movement pedigree, and precious metal case, watches like this remain surprisingly undervalued in today’s vintage market, making them some of the best value in vintage collecting.

Condition Report:

Case: Good overall condition with sharp bevels on lugs and deep hallmark on inner lug. Medium scratches and dents throughout case and bezel. There are isolated larger scratches on the caseback and signs of prior caseback removal on side of case. 

Strap/Bracelet: Generic replacement black crocodile strap and gold-tone pin buckle show medium signs of use/wear.

Dial/Hands/Crystal: Original IWC dial is in very well-preserved condition with little to no signs of age. Crystal and hands shows light scratches throughout.

Movement: Manual Winding IWC Cal. 89 is in nice aesthetic condition and is running at a 5-position average of +8.8 S/D | 240° AMP | 0.2MS BE
