Our Perspective:

The Patek Philippe reference 2551 embodies everything collectors love about 1950s Patek design: elegance, balanced proportions, and meticulous craftsmanship. Produced between 1954 and 1960, fewer than 1,500 examples were made in total across all metals, with cases crafted by Wenger, the same casemaker responsible for the iconic reference 2499. The result is a beautifully balanced 36 mm case with distinctive stepped lugs that give the watch a quieter presence compared to the sharper-beveled reference 2552.
Inside beats the Caliber 12-600 AT, Patek’s first self-winding/automatic movement. The reference 2551 was the second Patek Philippe reference to ever feature this movement, often regarded as the most beautiful automatic caliber ever made with it's hand-engraved 18K rotor. It powered only a handful of references and remains one of the most refined self-winding calibers ever produced. The watch also features the classic “PP” signed crown, a nod to the earlier, iconic reference 2526.
The dial, made by Stern Frères, is particularly worth mentioning. Unlike most pad-printed dials, this one features engraved enamel markings, which means the text and minute track are etched into the metal and filled with enamel. This technique gives the dial incredible depth and, importantly, allows it to be cleaned or restored without damaging the original print.

Condition Report:

Good vintage condition. Watch shows signs of daily regular wear including scratches and indentations throughout. Watch has been polished but still clearly retains it's stepped bevels and hallmark underneath crown. Original engraved enamel dial shows signs of previous cleaning/restoration by Patek Philippe and has developed a nice darker patina. There are only a few minor markings on dial. The engraved text is still slightly raised and accent over E is visible. Light oxidation on hands and indices. Light dust present on crystal and dial. Personal engraving on caseback from 1957. Replacement generic strap and buckle. Watch winds, sets and runs well- however, service is recommended for accurate timekeeping. Original PP crown slips occasionally when setting. Movement shows signs of prior servicing.
A complete overhaul can be completed for an additional fee upon request by buyer and will take 2-3 weeks. Please reach out for more information.
