The Rolex Bubbleback is one of the most recognizable early Oyster Perpetual models, earning its nickname from the rounded caseback designed to accommodate Rolex’s early automatic movements. Produced during a period when Rolex was establishing its reputation for reliable, waterproof wristwatches, these early Bubblebacks have become increasingly collectible for their distinctive proportions and wide variety of dial configurations.
This Ref. 6050 from 1948 measures 32mm in diameter and a substantial 14.5mm thick, giving it a surprisingly strong wrist presence for its size. The highlight is the beautiful tropical dial, which has aged from its original black to a rich, deep brown, developing a warmth and character that only decades of natural aging can produce. The dial appears to have been relumed, an important detail to note, while the watch retains its original Rolex pin buckle. Between its striking tropical patina, unusual proportions, and classic Bubbleback design, this is a particularly charming example of vintage Rolex.
Condition Report:
Case: Case has been previously polished and regularly worn with medium scratches and dings throughout. Serial and reference numbers are deep and clearly visible.
Strap/Bracelet: Replacement Rare Wrist black leather strap shows minimal wear throughout. Period-correct stainless steel Rolex pin buckle displays medium scratches and oxidation throughout. Fits a maximum wrist size of 7.25 inches.
Dial/Crystal/Hands: Lume on dial and hands appear to have been repainted. Black dial has developed an interesting deep brown patina throughout. Light scratches and signs of age throughout dial and hands. Watch received a new period-correct acrylic dome crystal.
Movement: Automatic Rolex Caliber has medium oxidation throughout. Watch winds, sets and runs however it has inaccurate timing a full service is recommended for accurate timekeeping
