The Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 16610 is one of the most recognizable dive watches ever produced, retaining the classic proportions and design that defined the Submariner for decades. Introduced in 1988 and produced until 2010, the reference features a 40mm stainless steel case, aluminum bezel insert, and Rolex's reliable automatic Caliber 3135. This 1999 A-serial example is particularly interesting for its rare transitional configuration, combining a "Swiss Made" Super-LumiNova dial, solid end links (SEL), and a traditional drilled lug holes case. These features were introduced at different points throughout the reference's production, making this combination relatively uncommon.
In our opinion, this is one of the most appealing configurations of the five-digit Submariner. The solid end links give the Oyster bracelet a noticeably more substantial feel compared to earlier hollow end-link examples, while the drilled lug holes make bracelet and strap changes much easier. Paired with the updated Super-LumiNova dial, it offers several practical improvements without losing the vintage charm of the earlier 16610s. It's a great middle ground for collectors who appreciate the classic aluminum bezel Submariner but want some of the refinements found on later examples.
Condition Report:
Case: Case has been recently professionally refinished and is free from major damage, though light scratches and wear may remain in some areas from prior use. The bezel and crown show scratches and signs of wear consistent with age. Minor spring bar marks on back of lugs. Bezel insert has light scratches. The watch has successfully passed a 3 bar pressure test.
Strap/Bracelet: Original Rolex 93250 stainless steel Oyster bracelet with Solid Endlinks (SEL) has been recently professionally refinished and remains in excellent condition, though some signs of wear may still be present from prior use. Bracelet has full 12 links plus diver's extension and fits a maximum wrist size of 7.5" (without extension). There is a minor bend on one clasp blade likely from an attempt to tighten the clasp. Light stretch throughout bracelet. Clasp code AB from 2000.
Dial/Crystal/Hands: Original Rolex dial is in well-preserved condition with minimal to no signs of wear/age. Hands have light scratches throughout. Sapphire crystal has light scratches mainly near the edges.
Movement: Automatic Rolex Caliber 3135 is running with a 5-position average of -2.5 S/D | 231° AMP | 0.1MS BE. All complications and functions work as intended.
