Our Perspective:
Most Datejusts from this era share a very similar look, which is what makes this example so compelling. This Rolex Datejust Ref. 16220 stands apart thanks to its once silver tapestry dial, which has developed a warm peach toned patina over time and gives the watch a truly one of a kind appearance. No two dials age the same, and this one has taken on a depth and character that cannot be recreated. What makes it even more special is the fact that it comes as a full set with its original inner and outer box, warranty papers dated April 2001, and care and instruction booklets. The details line up exactly as they should, with a P serial case dating to 2000, paired with its original stainless steel Jubilee bracelet featuring an AB clasp code, also from 2000. This level of consistency speaks volumes about authenticity and careful ownership over the years.
Powered by the reliable Caliber 3135 and sized at the classic 36mm, this Datejust wears effortlessly on nearly any wrist. Between the honest, perfectly-aged dial and the rare completeness of the full set, this is a watch that checks all the right boxes for collectors who value originality, provenance and character above all else.
Condition Report:
Very good vintage condition throughout. The case, bracelet, and bezel show moderate signs of wear, including light scratches and small dents, consistent with age. The case and engine turned bezel retain strong, sharp edges. The dial displays an even peach-toned patina across the surface, with a lighter concentration toward the center and minor markings near the 8 and 9 o’clock positions, as well as below the date window. There is a small nick along the edge of the sapphire crystal near 4 o’clock.
The Jubilee bracelet shows light stretch, includes 19 links, and fits a maximum wrist size of 7.25 inches. The AB clasp code from 2000 correctly matches the P serial case, as well as the warranty date of April 2001. The watch winds, sets, and runs properly, with a five position timegrapher average of +9.1 seconds per day, 252° amplitude, and 0.3ms beat error.
