Our Perspective:
The Rolex Explorer Ref. 1016 is one of the longest-running and most recognizable references Rolex ever produced. Introduced in the early 1960s and remaining in production until 1989, it defined the Explorer formula for nearly three decades. The clean 36mm case, matte black dial, and the unmistakable 3-6-9 layout created a watch built purely for legibility and durability, a design that remains largely unchanged in the Explorer line today.
Most collectors rightfully chase examples with every original component intact, but the reality is that vintage watches often come with the tradeoff of fragility. Tritium lume ages, dials become damaged and older bracelets can feel stretched or worn after decades of use. Our example takes a different, more practical route. At some point in its life, most likely during a Rolex service in the early 2000s, the watch received a full set of Rolex service components including a luminova dial, matching luminova hands and a newer style Oyster bracelet.
The result is an Explorer that keeps the vintage look while shedding much of the vintage worry. The luminova dial and hands are in perfect condition and glow bright, while the watch is paired with a newer solid Oyster bracelet with a 2008 date code, replacing the earlier rivet style. It’s still every bit the classic 1016, just configured in a way that makes it far easier to wear and enjoy every day.
Condition Report:
Very Good vintage condition. Watch has been recently fully overhauled and polished and is in excellent condition with very light signs of wear. Caseback has small nicks and signs of polishing.
The 78360 oyster bracelet is a later Rolex service replacement bracelet from 2008. Bracelet has 11 big links and is in seemingly unpolished condition with light scratches and little to no stretch.
Dial and hands are later Luminova Rolex service replacements and are in mint condition. Acrylic crystal shows faint scratches under magnification.
Rolex automatic caliber 1570 is beautiful aesthetic condition and recently received a full service. At time of cataloging, the watch is running at a perfect 5-position average of +0.0 S/D | 287° AMP | .2 MS BE. Passed a 3 bar pressure test, but caution should be used while wearing any vintage watch in water.
