Stainless Steel Cartier Tank Basculante 2390 Large Model Watch

Our Perspective:

First introduced in 1932, the Cartier Tank Basculante was designed around a clever reversible case mechanism that allowed the dial to be flipped inward for protection. Developed during the same era as the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, the Basculante takes a distinctly different approach, with its case rotating vertically within an outer frame rather than sliding and flipping horizontally. The result is one of Cartier's more mechanically interesting designs, combining the familiar Tank silhouette with a playful and functional complication.

This Ref. 2390 is a particularly appealing modern interpretation of the original design, featuring a stainless steel case and the signature cabochon integrated into its rotating mechanism. Unlike the more conventional Tank models, the Basculante offers two distinct appearances depending on whether the dial is exposed or concealed. Its clean Art Deco proportions and unusual construction make it a personal favorite within the broader Tank family, especially for collectors looking for something a little less conventional without straying too far from Cartier's design language.

Condition Report:

Case: Seemingly unpolished case has been lightly worn with light scratches and very small dings.

Strap/Bracelet: Original Cartier blue alligator strap has light creasing and signs of wear. Fits a maximum wrist size of 7.5". Original stainless steel deployant clasp has light scratches throughout.

Dial/Crystal/Hands: Silver guilloché dial, blued steel hands and sapphire crystal are in near-mint condition with little to no signs of wear/age.

Movement: Manual-winding Cartier caliber winds, sets and runs perfectly with a timegraph readout of +2.9 S/D | 307° AMP | 0.0 MS BE.
