Our Perspective:
In our opinion, the Ikepod Megapode MG01 remains one of the most distinctive chronographs of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Founded by Marc Newson and Oliver Ike, Ikepod challenged nearly every convention of traditional Swiss watchmaking, replacing sharp edges and conservative styling with smooth organic forms and futuristic design. Measuring 47mm in diameter and 18mm thick, the titanium MG01 wears with significant presence while remaining surprisingly comfortable thanks to its rounded, lugless pebble-shaped construction.
The dial is a perfect reflection of Ikepod's design philosophy. While busy at first glance, the chronograph layout remains highly legible and thoughtfully organized, creating an instrument-like appearance full of depth, texture, and visual interest. Complementing the case is Ikepod's signature integrated rubber strap, whose seamless construction feels remarkably modern and is often compared to design elements later seen in the Apple Watch, another iconic design by Marc Newson.
Equally distinctive is the famous Ikepod case itself. The smooth pebble-shaped titanium construction has become one of the most recognizable silhouettes in modern watch design. Turning the watch over reveals the brand's signature off-center sapphire porthole caseback, a Marc Newson hallmark that provides a view of the automatic modified ETA Valjoux 7750 movement within. More than two decades later, the MG01 still feels futuristic, a testament to the timelessness of its design and the growing collectibility of early Ikepod watches like this 00** serial example.
